RESEARCH COOPERATION FOR DEVELOPMENT

Invitation

8–9 November at Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, the Kilimanjaro

40 years of research cooperation between Sweden and Tanzania is an
occasion to celebrate the achievements made and the ones yet to come.

The cooperation between our countries has resulted in a big number of researchers and
invaluable knowledge generated through their research in areas such as HIV, malaria, gender,
climate change, GIS, energy, marine sciences, urban planning, business, reproductive and
child health, archeology among others.

We are immensely pleased to invite you to a two-day event on 8 and 9 November where the
results from the research cooperation will be presented, and the challenges and opportunities
of future cooperation will be explored.

Link to program

In 1977, Sweden and Tanzania ventured into a new area of cooperation – research. By that
time, research in Tanzania was limited and the Swedish support was directed to the Tanzania
National Scientific Research Council to provide grants for researchers. Gradually, the coopera-
tion grew with an increasing focus on developing institutional research capacity in which
research training in areas of relevance to Tanzania was a key. Long term partners within the
cooperation are University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Muhimbili University of Health and
Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and Ardhi University (ARU) who have developed strong partner-
ships with Swedish universities. In recent years the cooperation has incorporated COSTECH,
with the mission to lead Tanzanian research into the future.

We hope you will accompany us to celebrate and learn about the achievements, challenges
and opportunities in the presence of the Vice President of Tanzania, the Minister of Education,
Science and Technology, the Swedish State Secretary of Higher Education and Research,
Sida Director General and many more participants.
